Life magazine's 1999 house of the year was designed by SALA Architects with the aim of showing how to create intimate, well-detailed spaces in a house in which every square inch gets used often. This Afton house has 4,250 finished square feet, including five bedrooms and five bathrooms on three levels, as well as a loft, amusement room, family room and views of the St. Croix River.

This whole-nine-yards house was one of two versions built with the same plan that year -- both designed by SALA -- to show two levels of finish and affordability. The more austere, less-expensive house was built in Wayzata.

Life magazine has commissioned architects to design houses ever since 1938 when Frank Lloyd Wright was among those who submitted plans. Sharon O'Flannigan of Coldwell Banker Burnet has the listing. Call 651-430-7759 or visit www.oflannigan.com to see more photos.
