A man said he picked up a woman off a Minneapolis street and fatally shot her in his apartment during a dispute over his $30, according to charges filed Friday.

Raymond Lewis Jones, 65, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting late Wednesday afternoon at his home in the 2600 block of W. Broadway.

Jones was arrested that evening and remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail. Court records do not list an attorney for him.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to identify the woman. Police are not releasing the woman’s name and have only said she was 42 years old.

According to the criminal complaint:

Officers were sent to the apartment and saw the woman on the floor with a pocketknife in her hand. She had been shot in the chest and was declared dead by emergency medical personnel.

Jones told police he met that woman that day near E. Franklin Avenue and 10th or 11th Avenue S. He said he has picked up prostitutes from that area in the past. He said the two of them made an arrangement for sex.

At some point, Jones said “this wasn’t working” and she put on her jacket intending to leave. He said he saw that she took $30 left on the table and put the money in a book over his objection.

Jones claimed she found his handgun in the apartment and brandished a knife. He said he pulled the trigger but insisted it fired as he struggled with the woman.

Police asked Jones why he didn’t let the woman leave the apartment, and he replied, “because she had my $30,” the charges read.

Jones acknowledged having no injuries from the confrontation, and officers saw no evidence of any.

There have been 59 homicides in the city this year, five occurring since Oct. 30, according to a Minnesota Star Tribune database. That compares to 69 at this time last year.
