WCHA roundup: North Dakota ties Alaska Anchorage on late goal

After the first big weekend of WCHA games, Denver and St. Cloud State share first place with four points. Both are 2-0-0. The Huskies play at Denver next weekend in a battle for the top spot.

The Gophers, who play Canisius on Sunday and are 1-1-0 in conference play, are tied for sixth with two points.

North Dakota 3, Alaska Anchorage 3, OT, tie

Junior defenseman Derek Forbort's goal from the left point with 68 seconds left in the third period gave UND a tie with the Seawolves. The overtime was scoreless.

Scott Allen gave UAA a 1-0 lead in the first period. UND's Corban Knight tied the score with a goal for his 99th point.

North Dakota led 2-1 after two periods on Rocco Grimaldi's rebound goal.

Tyler Currie's short-handed goal at 3:19 of the third period for UAA tied the score at 2-2 and teammate Jordan Kwas scored midway through the period as the visitors took a 3-2 lead.

Minnesota Duluth 2, Wisconsin 2, OT, tie

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into the third period, but only got a tie. Tony Cameranesi scored on a rebound at 18 minutes of the first period for UMD and Keegan Flaherty scored in the second period.

Wisconsin's goals were scored by Mark Zengerle a 1:36 of the third period and Michael Mersch at 14:47.

Joel Rumpel stopped 35 shots for the Badgers, Matt McNeely had 19 saves for UMD, nine in the third period.

St. Cloud State 5, Minnesota State Mankato 1

In the first 65 seconds of the third period. the Huskies had a 3-0 lead. Junior forward Nic Dowd scored a power-play goal at 27 seconds and senior forward Drew LeBlanc got the next goal at 1:05.

Thorson scored his second goal at 14:24 to make it 4-0 and Kalle Kossila made it 5-0 on a short-handed goal at 18:20.

The Mavericks ended Ryan Faragher's shutout with 52 seconds left. Evan Mosey scored short-handed.

Faragher made 35 saves, 18 in the third period, and was named the No. 1 star of the game, Thorson was No. 2 and LeBlanc No. 3.

MSU Mankato outshot the Huskies 36-30. ... Those interested in hearing more about Huskies hockey can tune into the Bob Motzko Show at 6 p.m. Monday on KNSI 1450-AM or 103.3-FM. Motzko is SCSU's head coach.

Defensemen David Makowski and Joey LaLeggia each had one goal and one assist, as did forward Shawn Ostrow to lead the Pioneers. Quentin Shore and Daniel Doremus had the other goals for DU.

Dennis Rix scored twice for the Huskies, once in the first period short-handed and in the third at even strength. Michigan Tech outshot the Pioineers 38-28, including 30-12 in the final two periods. DU goalie Adam Murray stopped 36 shots.

The Pioneers have scored five goals in each of their first four games.

"We're getting good balance," DU coach George Gwozdecky said. "Adam Murray's teammates didn't make it easy on him tonight. He earned that win.

"I was pleased with the way we started the game. I thought we dictated the pace early, kind of like they did to us last night. We had some avoidable penalties in the second period, and we never really got back into sync after that. They had their chances, but our penalty kill, including Adam Murray, did an outstanding job tonight."

Dave Boehm's second goal of the game, late in the second period, was the game-winner for the Beavers who won the 1,000th game in school history. Boehm is a senior forward from Naples, Fla.

Ben Kinne had the first goal for BSU on a power play. Until then, the Beavers had been 0 for 11 on the man advantage this season.

James Polk and Josh Archibald scored for the Mavericks in the second period. UNO outshot Bemidji State 27-19.

BSU's all-time record is 1,000-505-95.
