The Wayzata boys' swim and dive team went silent for a moment after David Plummer touched the wall to finish the 100-meter backstroke final at the Rio Olympics Monday night.

They waited for his name pop onto the screen and when it did the room erupted in celebration.

Plummer, the Wayzata boys' swim coach and Gophers alum, had finished third with a time of 52.40 to claim the bronze medal is his Olympics debut.

Swimmers, parents and assistant coaches gathered at the home of senior swimmer Eli Greenblat to watch Monday's race. Observer Kari Samuelson caught the moment on camera.

The boys followed the same routine they do when one of their teammates is swimming by starting the race with a momentum-building cheer followed by another cheer after the race, said assistant coach Mike Yasis.

NBC surprised Plummer Tuesday with letters from his Wayzata swimmers and he read them live on Facebook.

He started the segment by introducing himself as "David Plummer, I won a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke. I'm the head coach at Wayzata High School."

The first letter starts "Dear Plummer, you did it! You achieved your Olympic dream."

He goes on to read all the letters and fights back tears along the way. His swimmers remind him "before you finish reading this letter, take a couple of deep breaths and look around. You're at the Olympic Games and you just won."

Plummer replied with a message for his swimmers and Minnesota supporters. "Thanks for everything. I learned as much from you guys as you did from me," He said. "I promise."

Plummer is also an assistant coach for the Minnetonka girls' swim team.
