Volleyball: Gibbemeyer earns award, invited to train with national team

This was a big week for Gophers volleyball player Lauren Gibbemeyer, a middle blocker from Cretin-Derham Hall.

Lauren Gibbemeyer, a senior middle blocker for the Gophers, has been named to Volleyball Magazine second all-America team.

Gibbemeyer, a first team All-Big Ten pick, joins Blair Brown and Arielle Wilson of Penn State and Ashley Benson of Indiana on Volleyball Magazine's all-america teams. Brown made the first team, the others made the second team with Gibbemeyer.

She finished with a school-record 593 total blocks, was ninth on the school's all-time list in kills at 1,421 and finished
second in hitting percentage. Gibbemeyer finished the season with 3.29 kills per sets and 1.38 blocks per set. She hit .375.

Gibbemeyer became the first player in school history to collect 100 blocks in one season four times.

Gibbemeyer also made the NCAA Regional all-tournament team in Washington and was a
three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection.

On Monday, Gibbemeyer accepted an invitation to train with the U.S. national team in Anaheim, Calif.
