Twins put catcher Christian Vázquez on injured list because of left shoulder infection

The Twins and Kansas City open a three-game series at Target Field tonight.

The Twins put Christian Vázquez on the 10-day injured list Friday because of a left shoulder inflection. The move is retroactive to Wednesday.

The veteran catcher is hitting .174 with two home runs in 61 games.

Catcher Jhonny Pereda was called up from St. Paul. Pareda, claimed off waivers from the A’s on July 22, was 7-for-21 with a home run in six games for the Saints. The 29-year-old has played in 39 major league games with the Marlins and A’s, hitting .203.

KANSAS CITY UPDATE

The Royals (57-58) are in third place, 2½ games ahead of the Twins in the AL Central, as they wrap up a nine-game road trip with their second visit of the season to Target Field. They are 18-12 since July 1.

C Salvador Perez has hit safely in 15 of 18 games since the All-Star break. He has gone 21-for-71 in the stretch to raise his season average to .252. ... OF Mike Yastrzemski is 5-for-16 with a home run and three RBI in six games with the Royals since being acquired from San Francisco on July 31. ... OF Kyle Isbel is hitting .333 (16-for-48) since the All-Star Break.

LHP Daniel Lynch, who had been sidelined since July 5 because of an elbow nerve irritation, was activated from the injured list on Sunday. 2B Michael Massey (back tightness) and OF Mark Canha (left elbow epicondylitis), RHPs Steven Cruz (right shoulder impingement) and Michael Lorenzen (left oblique strain) and LHPs Kris Bubic (left rotator cuff strain) and Cole Ragans (left rotator cuff strain) are out.

TWINS UPDATE

The Twins (54-60) return home after a six-game road trip to Cleveland and Detroit, going 3-3. They are 14-17 against AL Central teams and 3-4 against the Royals.

C Ryan Jeffers has a season-high, nine-game hitting streak and is hitting .355 (27-for-76) over the last 21 games. On the season, he is hitting .260. ... RHP Brooks Kriske, who was claimed on waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Wednesday in his debut for the Twins. The Twins are his fifth MLB club since his debut in 2020.

OF Trevor Larnach (left side soreness) sat out the series finale on Wednesday in Detroit. Larnach is day-to-day. ... OF Byron Buxton (left rib cartilage irritation), who was eligible to be activated from the injured list on Wednesday, is close to returning. ... RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (illness), RHP David Festa (right shoulder inflammation), LHP Anthony Misiewicz (left pectoral strain), C Christian Vázquez (shoulder) and RHP Pablo López (right teres major strain) are out.

After this series, the Twins travel to New York for a three-game series with the Yankees, beginning Monday. Then they return home for a seven-game homestand against Detroit and the Athletics, beginning August 14.
