Twins-Blue Jays series preview: Pitching probables, TV-radio information, injury report

Toronto leads the American League East, and has added former Twins Louie Varland and Ty France.

TWINS UPDATE

The Twins (59-71) are 1-2 against the AL East-leading Blue Jays this season. They lost the first two games of a three-game series in June at Target Field, before Ryan pitched them to a 6-3 victory in the series finale on June 8. ... The Twins are 14-10 against AL East teams this season and are 26-40 on the road.

Rookie 2B Luke Keaschall has reached base safely in 23 of his first 25 games. He is hitting .337. ... OF Byron Buxton is 19-for-19 in stolen base attempts this season, just one of two players in MLB with a percentage of 100 percent. Boston’s Trevor Story (22-for-22) is the other. Buxton is 25-for-25 in stolen base attempts since last being thrown out on May 1, 2024.

RHP Pablo López (right teres major strain) and RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (illness) are on rehab assignments with the Class AA Saints. Both pitched for the Saints on Thursday. López is expected to make another appearance for the Saints this week, while Woods Richardson could join the Twins in Toronto, the organization that traded him to the Twins in 2021. ... C Christian Vázquez (left shoulder infection), RHP David Festa (right shoulder inflammation), LHP Anthony Misiewicz (left pectoral strain) and OF Alan Roden (left thumb sprain) are out. Festa could begin a rehab assignment with the Saints this week.

After the series in Toronto and an off day on Thursday, the Twins begin a three-game series against NL West co-leader San Diego on Friday at Target Field.

The Blue Jays (76-55) open a six-game homestand after going 3-3 on a road trip to Pittsburgh and Miami. After losing two of three in Pittsburgh, they Jays won the first two games in Miami before the Marlins won 5-3 on Sunday. ... The Blue Jays were 26-28 after a loss to Texas on on May 28. Since then, they are 50-27. They moved into first place in the AL East on July 2 and have been there since.

SS Bo Bichette leads the American League with 164 hits and is batting .304 with 16 home runs and 83 RBI. Bichette leads MLB with 47 multi-hit games this season. ... Scherzer, in his 19th MLB season, has a 9-2 record in 18 career starts against the Twins. Scherzer will be making his first appearance against the Twins since Sept. 1, 2023, when he was with Texas. He pitched six shutout innings but got a no-decision when the Twins rallied for a 5-1 victory in Texas. Ryan was the winning pitcher.

Bassitt is tied for sixth in the AL in victories (11). He is 1-1 with a 5.26 ERA in seven career appearances (four starts) against the Twins. ... Lauer, who spent the first month of the season with Class AAA Buffalo, is 7-1 since June 1. He is 1-2 in three career appearances against the Twins. He was the winning pitcher in the Blue Jays’ 6-4 victory on June 6 at Target Field.

Former Twins 1B Ty France is hitting .296 in 19 games since coming over at the trade deadline. ... Former Twins RHP Louie Varland is 0-0 with a 5.59 ERA in 10 appearances with the Blue Jays.

RHPs Yimi García (right ulnar nerve symptoms), Nick Sandlin (right elbow inflammation) and Bowden Francis (right shoulder impingement), and OF Anthony Santander (left shoulder inflammation) are out.
