WASHINGTON – Taiye Bello scored a career-high 25 points and the Gophers women's basketball team used a game-ending 15-0 run to secure a 70-53 victory over American on Sunday at Bender Arena.
The Gophers have won seven straight since losing their season opener and have a chance to win three road games in seven days when they play at George Washington on Tuesday. A return to the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday is not out of the question.
Bello was 9-for-14 from the floor and also had 10 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double and her sixth this season. She also had three steals and attempted 10 of her team's 14 free throws.
Jasmine Brunson scored 12 points; freshman Sara Scalia had 10 points, four steals and four rebounds; and freshman Jasmine Powell chipped in five points, five assists and a season-best eight rebounds.
The Gophers shot 51% from the field and were even better from three-point range (53.8%).
A three-pointer by American's Kaitlyn Marenyi with 5:47 to play in the fourth quarter cut the Gophers' lead to 55-53, but the Eagles wouldn't score again as they missed their final nine shot attempts.
American's 53 points and 30.6% shooting from the field were season lows for a Gophers opponent.
Jade Edwards scored 20 points for American (2-6), which has lost five straight. The Eagles are a member of the Patriot League.
