Two stands inside Graze Food Hall by Travail are ending their tenure: Tixtli by Nixta has closed, and Caja, the fried chicken spot from chef Alex Roberts, will leave at the end of January. But two new spots are on the horizon — both from Travail.

Opening on Jan. 9 will be Berto’s, specializing in the burrito stand comforts familiar to anyone from the Southwest, where tortillas are stuffed with meat and French fries.

“This one is deeply personal for me,” said Travail Collective partner Mike Brown. “My mom grew up in a Mexican restaurant founded by her grandmother in 1940 in La Tapatia. Brown said he remembers soaking in all the sights, smells, sounds and flavors of the kitchen when they’d go home to visit. “I remember mashing the beans — this is the food I grew up with.”

The cuisine is inspired by Jalisco region with that Baja influence, and Berto’s menu is fortified with long-simmered goods wrapped in tortillas and served with a customizable mix of spice and toppings from the salsa bar.

Anyone who has hopped off a plane in Southern California and stopped at a burrito stand on the way to their final destination will recognize these dishes: crispy-rolled tacos/taquitos/flautas filled with birria; carne asada fries, loaded with steak and smothered in nacho cheese; tacos with crusty fried fish served with fresh slaw; and more.

For beverages, there will be agua de Jamaica, horchata, Mexican Coke, Sprite and six flavors of Jarritos that Brown has determined are the best.

When the chef-run restaurant group took over the food hall in late 2025, Tixtli by Nixta was one of several new concepts. It’s an idea that we might see again. Run by the Oro by Nixta team, they said it hopes to revive the taco project “once immigration, small business and food footings feel less shaky.”

News of Travail’s second, unnamed concept coming to Graze will come after Caja ends its run.

Starting 2026 with a bang, Travail also announced that Pig Ate My Pizza is officially open in Bloomington (10700 Bloomington Ferry Road). And Dream Creamery Nokomis (4724 Cedar Av. S., Mpls.), the second location of its popular burger-ice cream concept, is open daily next to ie by Travail.

New pizza residency at Bauhaus Brew Labs

After years of feeding the regulars at Bauhaus Brew Labs in Northeast, Animales took its barbecue operation to its spirited standalone restaurant in north Minneapolis last fall, leaving a vacancy for another food star to rise. Enter Red Rocket Pizza Co.

After starting in a north Minneapolis garage, Red Rocket has been on the brewery circuit, parking everywhere from St. Paul to Spring Park.

The pizza truck rolls into Bauhaus starting Wednesday, Jan. 7, and will be serving up its woodfired pies in the evenings Wednesday through Friday and all day Saturday. To celebrate, on Jan. 10 pizzas will be $5 off, and pints will go for $5.

As always, Bauhaus allows customers to bring their own food, too.

Longtime food truck favorite has opened a pasty shop on W. 7th Street in St. Paul. (The Minnesota Star Tribune)

Pair a pasty with a six-pack

It’s savory pie season in St. Paul since Potter’s Pasties & Pies opened up its newest location inside the Dabbler Depot liquor store on W. 7th Street in St. Paul. A longtime beloved food truck specializing in Cornish-style pasties stuffed with savory mixes of meat and vegetables, this new location replaces a coffee shop inside the shared building.

On the menu are hot and ready pasties, like the traditional kind with ground beef, vegetables and rosemary gravy, or the fan-favorite Thai curry vegetarian option, both priced at $8. There’s also a selection of take-and-bake frozen pasties available.

The shop is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Potter’s Pasties is also available from a small fleet of trucks or its Como Avenue location in Minneapolis.

Downtown St. Paul cafe to hold reopening bash

Hepcat Coffee will host a grand reopening bash planned for Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. The cafe on the ground floor of the Osborn370 Plaza has undergone a monthslong expansion and remodeling. During construction the cafe from chef Terry John Zila has operated on a limited menu of his signature sweets, sandwiches and coffee beverages.

After three years in downtown St. Paul, Hepcat has expanded to include an event space, and the new construction offers even more space for offsite meetings or lingering over cake slices inside the sleek setting.

For more details on the menu and hours, follow Hepcat’s Instagram.

Gas station dinners fuel up

The team behind El Sazon Tacos & More has a few high-octane treats in store at its Eagan location inside a BP gas station.

Chef Cristian de Leon continues to host tasting dinners in the most unexpected of places, the gas station/convenience store. After welcoming chef Adam Ritter of Bucheron to collaborate last year, El Sazon’s series continues for the first quarter of 2026 with another stellar lineup of chefs.

On Jan. 22, catch Jason Sawicki of Black Duck; on Feb. 23, Abraham Gessesse of Hyacinth; and on a date in March to be announced, Soleil Ramirez of Crasqui.

The six-course dinners with mocktail pairings go for $95 plus tax and gratuity.
