New Prague wins Class 3A girls' golf tournament; Alexandria's Maggie Leland is individual champ

It is the first championship for both

New Prague's girls' golf team is your 2010 Class 3A champion. The Trojans led by three here at Bunker Hills heading into today, and upped that to seven over runner-up Edina to claim their first state championship.

Eighth-grader McKenzie Neisen led New Prague with a two-day total of 148, tied with Eastview's Sara Detlefsen for second-best score of the tournament. Sister Steffi Neisen, a senior, finished fifth with a 152.

Maggie Leland of Alexandria shot a 5-under 68 out here today (par is 73 from the red tees) and breezed to a 3 under 143 total for the individual title.

After carding three birdies and an eagle on the front nine today, she called her play on the back nine "boring, but fun."

Defending champion Betsy Kelly of Forest Lake finished in fourth place with a 149.

We're on time out here for the boys' tournament, which should be wrapping up in a couple of hours. Wayzata had a 12-shot lead heading into today. My guess is that sticks. Conditions are absolutely stunning today, so some good scores can be had and Wayzata has the horses to make that happen. I may or may not have been told that a 290 is possible from your defending champions ...
