Motorists crossing the St. Croix River on Hwy. 36 near Stillwater may encounter lane and ramp closures starting Monday.
At 8 a.m., Minnesota Department of Transportation maintenance crews will begin removing peeling epoxy coating from the bridge that connects Minnesota to Wisconsin. The work is expected to be completed on Thursday, according to a news release.
Work will begin on the eastbound lanes and then switch to the westbound lanes, the release said, adding that 12-foot width restrictions will be in place as well.
Kent Barnard, a MnDOT spokesman, said the project is standard maintenance.
The construction has “no structural purpose” and is to protect the bridge deck and driving surface. The closures might be extended if crews need additional time to complete the project.
Later in August, a different sealer with sand for traction will be applied to the four-lane bridge, which is officially named St. Croix Crossing. Barnard said he does not know when the sealer will be put on the bridge.
“It all depends on when it comes in,” he said. “It’s been ordered.”

Additionally, electrical crews will begin work on Tuesday to replace navigation lightbulbs near the bottom of the bridge piers.
