Caitlin Gregg of Minneapolis won the 51K American Birkebeiner ski race from Cable to Hayward, Wis., on Saturday in 2 hours, 22 minutes, 44.5 seconds.

It was her fourth title in the race, all since 2011.

She won by 5.1 seconds over Aurelie Dabudyk of Le Grand Bornad, France.

David Norris of Fairbanks, Alaska, was the men's winner in 2:05:35.4, edging Ivan Perrillat Boiteux of Paris by a second.

Three golds for U diver

Gophers junior Yu Zhou won the platform diving event (363.20 points) for her third gold in the Big Ten women's swimming and diving championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Earlier, Zhou won the 1- and 3-meter events and, for the second consecutive year, was named the diver of the meet.

Minnesota, the four-time defending champion in the conference meet, finished third (927.5) this year behind Michigan (1,361) and Indiana (1,207.5). Sophomore Dani Nack placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.55) and also swam on the 400 freestyle relay, which was fourth (3:17.01).

U wins in baseball

The Gophers baseball team beat Utah Valley 8-2 on Saturday in its second game of the season in Surprise, Ariz.

Minnesota (2-0) took a 6-0 lead with four runs in the fifth inning. Leadoff hitter Dan Motl was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Matt Stemper had a two-run single in the fifth.

Lefthander Dalton Sawyer started for the Gophers, pitching 4⅔ scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, struck out five and walked one.

U softball splits

The Gophers softball team rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie, but lost to No. 13 Florida State 5-4 on Saturday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Tallahassee, Fla.

Sam Macken hit a solo homer for the Gophers (5-3) and had an RBI single in the seventh. Minnesota's second run of that inning was scored on a wild pitch tying the score at 4-4.

Earlier in the day, Paige Palkovich had two doubles and three RBI to lead the Gophers past Virginia Tech 9-3.

Ex-JM coach dies

Al Wold, who coached Rochester John Marshall to the 1969 one-class boys' basketball state championship, died at his home in Rochester on Thursday. He was 90.

Wold, who coached John Marshall from 1966 to 1988, led the Rockets to four state tournament berths — 1969, 1973, 1984 and 1984. Wold also coached at Lyle, Kenyon and Faribault. He retired with 482 career victories.

• Twelve volleyball players on the current Gophers roster are at the U.S. women's national team open tryouts in Colorado Springs. The three-day tryouts, during which 225 athletes from 88 colleges are being evaluated, conclude Sunday. Sixty spots on five teams in the U.S. collegiate national program are at stake.

• St. Thomas senior Emily Gapinski won the 1-mile run (4:53.46) in the Parents' Day Open at the ­University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.

• Germany's Ken Roczen held off Belle Plaine's Ryan Dungey to win the Monster Energy AMA Supercross race in Arlington, Texas, cutting Dungey's points lead to 23 after seven races.
