A suspect is in custody after a fatal shooting inside a Maplewood apartment complex prompted a shelter-in-place order Wednesday morning.

A 55-year-old woman was shot and killed around 10:45 a.m. on the 2500 block of Ivy Avenue E., according to the Maplewood Police Department. First responders found the victim in the hallway of the apartment complex, and she later died at a hospital.

A 56-year-old suspect may have fled into the woman’s apartment, police said, so neighbors were evacuated, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the area and a SWAT team from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene.

Eventually, the SWAT team entered the apartment and located the suspect with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. He was hospitalized.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide with help from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
