A 25-year-old Twin Cities man suffered fatal injuries in an accident on a ski slope near Red Wing, Minn., according to his family.

Walker Phenix Nelson of Minneapolis “died as he lived, doing what he loved,” his obituary read.

The Red Wing Fire Department said Nelson struck a lift tower about 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 at Welch Village ski area, just south of Red Wing.

Peter Zotalis, president and general manager of Welch Village, released a statement to the Minnesota Star Tribune on Feb. 9 that read, “We are grateful to our ski patrol, mountain staff, and emergency services for their swift response. We ask for your continued prayers and support for the skier’s family.”

Nelson attended Minneapolis South High School and graduated from the University of Oregon before becoming marketing director for Skyway Theater in downtown Minneapolis, the obituary noted.

“He loved his childhood home so much that he had our house number tattooed on his chest,” the obituary continued. “Surrounded by albums, he acquired a love for music, taking after his father. He had an eye for fashion, taking after his mother.”
