MakeMusic acquires assets of Internet music company

Eden Prairie-based MakeMusic, Inc., announced Monday it has acquired selected assets of Recordare LLC, the California-based Internet music publishing and software company.

MakeMusic said it completed the purchase of Recordare's MusicXML open format and Dolet software technology, including copyrights, source code and trademarks. Terms of the deal were not disclosed,

"This transaction strengthens MakeMusic's position as a global leader of music innovation," said CEO Karen van Lith. "With support of more than 150 music applications, Recordare's MusicXML format is a key element in the future of digital notation."

MakeMusic, which has 110 employees, sells software to music students and teachers that shows them when music is played correctly. The company also produces software to help composers, arrangers and publishers to edit, print and publish their work.

Earlier this month, MakeMusic, which delayed delivery of one of its key software products, posted a net loss of $205,000 for the third quarter compared to a net gain of $241,000 a year earlier. Net revenue for the first nine months of the year was $11.1 million compared to $12.3 million a year earlier.
