October 2, 2014 at 2:01AM

Liberty Diversified International of New Hope said it has acquired San Diego-based Harbor Packaging, a designer and manufacturer of corrugated packaging and point-of-purchase displays in Southern California and Mexico. Harbor Packaging will be managed as a sister company to Liberty's Mexico operation in Mexicali.

Terms of the deal were not announced. The combined Harbor operations employ approximately 225 people, with slightly more than half in the United States.

The deal is the first sizable acquisition since 2011 for LDI, which has been making boxes and paper products in the Twin Cities since 1918 and employs 1,600. In addition to here and Mexico, the firm also has a major operation in Fort Worth, Texas.

Bob Walton, Harbor Packaging's CEO, has been named a Liberty vice president for the Southwest and Mexico.
