Stacey Nogy, a KARE 11 employee for more than 30 years, has stepped down as the station’s news director.
The announcement was made on air Friday at the end of the 4 p.m. newscast.
“I did practice this a lot so I could hopefully get through this without crying,” said anchor Rena Sarigianopoulos before showing video from the office going-away party that took place less than an hour earlier. “As news director, she got us through some of the most difficult stories.”
Nogy’s departure comes at a time of big changes at KARE. Sports anchor Reggie Wilson announced last week that he’s leaving the NBC affiliate at the end of the year. Meteorologist Wren Clair, who has filed a lawsuit against former employee KSTP, has already parted ways with the station. Randy Shaver, one of KARE’s main anchors, left in 2024 and now covers high school sports for the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Nogy came to KARE in 1992 as a producer and worked her way up the ranks. She was named news director at the end of 2020. Under her watch, the station won a national Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence, an honor the affiliate had also earned in 1997, 2001 and 2004.
“Stacey has been the heart of KARE 11’s newsroom for decades,” said general manager Doug Wieder. “Her leadership, thoughtfulness and passion for storytelling have shaped our coverage and made her a tireless advocate for strong journalism in the Twin Cities.”
It’s unclear what Nogy will do next. In a 2023 story about Barbara Walters’ legacy, Nogy gave credit to the women in broadcasting that came before her.
“We never thought we couldn’t do it,” said Nogy, who served as editor for PennWest Edinboro university in Pennsylvania, where she attended school in the late ’80s. “It had already been done.”
