Police are investigating a brazen daytime shooting that rocked a south Minneapolis neighborhood Tuesday, leaving one dead and six others injured.

The shooting unfolded about 1:30 p.m. on a sidewalk across the street from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School on the 2900 block of 4th Avenue S.

It’s the fourth mass shooting reported in Minneapolis this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks such incidents from various publicly available sources.

Here are four things to know about Tuesday’s incident:

Who was hurt?

A man was killed, while five men and one woman were also injured, Police Chief Brian O’Hara said. Three were in critical condition, but all are expected to survive.

Speaking at the scene Tuesday afternoon, O’Hara did not have additional information on the victims.

How did the shooting happen?

O’Hara said the suspect stepped out of a vehicle and fired about 30 rounds from a high-velocity .223-caliber rifle. The victims were standing on a sidewalk. The suspect fled in a vehicle, and it is believed they acted alone.

O’Hara emphasized the firepower of the weapon used, describing it as a “weapon of war” that inflicted “unspeakable” injuries on the victims.

What is known about the motive and the shooter?

O’Hara said at least one person in the group was targeted.

Police have not announced an arrest, but O’Hara was confident a suspect would be identified.

“We have substantial pieces of evidence that we are reviewing, and I feel confident that we will be able to identify this person,” O’Hara said.

What other mass shootings have occurred in Minnesota this year?

Minnesota averaged 12 mass shootings a year from 2022 through 2024 and has recorded five in 2025, according to the Gun Violence Archive. There is no standard definition of a mass shooting, but the archive defines the term as incidents when four or more victims are shot, not including the perpetrator.

The 2025 incidents include the June political shootings in Brooklyn Park that killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and injured state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in Champlin. In late April, four people were killed and a fifth was wounded in what law enforcement has said was a gang-related shooting in Minneapolis.

The other two incidents – one in January and the other in June – in total killed one person and wounded eight.
