Former Somerset, Wis., Village Board President Michael Kappers on Thursday was found not guilty by a jury on all charges related to an alleged sexual assault and battery in May of 2023 at his home at Somerset’s Hideaway Campground.

Kappers, the campground’s owner, faced two counts of second degree sexual assault, one count of third degree sexual assault and one count of battery after a woman alleged that Kappers didn’t stop when she asked him to during sex. The woman said Kappers also injured her with a painful and unwanted back massage.

She reported the alleged assault to the sheriff’s office in August 2023.

In court documents, Kappers’ attorney pointed to text messages between the woman and Kappers the day after their encounter in which they both said they had enjoyed the sex.

Kappers chose not to run for re-election to the village board in April 2025.
