Football meets bowling: Fowling Warehouse opens in North Loop

While having nothing to do with birds, the game of fowling now flocks to Minneapolis.

Football and bowling come together as one activity with the grand opening of Fowling Warehouse in the North Loop on Saturday.

Despite the spelling, this game has nothing to do with birds. The only thing flying is a football across the lane.

Similar to beer pong, the goal of the game is to get rid of all your opponent’s 10 pins. This is done by throwing a football (overhand, underhand, through the legs — just no kicking) at the other team’s pins.

Fowling Warehouse is walking distance from Target Field and around the corner from the Minneapolis Farmers Market.

“We’re a great location to visit before or after events down here,” said Andrew Cunningham, general manager of Fowling Warehouse Minneapolis.

Fowling Warehouse first opened in Detroit in 2014. The Grand Rapids, Mich., location opened in 2018, and there are now eight Fowling Warehouse locations, most in the Midwest.

The fowling lanes are first come, first served and cost $15 per person for unlimited play all day. If there are no available lanes, Fowling Warehouse suggests waiting and calling next on a lane, similar to how you would for beer pong or pool.

Reservations are also possible for private parties or those who don’t want to chance it. Guests can reserve a lane for up to 10 people for 2 hours for $140.

The North Loop location opens with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by free fowling all day. Fowling Warehouse will also host giveaways throughout the day.

There is no entry fee for those who choose not to participate in fowling, but still want to have a drink at the bar, eat food or play the other arcade games offered.

Cunningham first got to know fowling as a customer in Detroit. After visits to other Fowling Warehouses, Cunningham decided to open a location in the Twin Cities.

Cunningham said people should come in ready to engage with the game and the people around them.

“Put your phones down, and enjoy,” Cunningham said.
