Woodbury police say investigators are trying to figure out who killed a 20-month-old boy whose death was ruled a homicide five months later, officials said.

Maxmiliano Quy Diaz Castro suffered “blunt abdominal trauma” and died on Sept. 8 at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said in a form posted to its public data portal last week.

“We do have this case,” Woodbury police Cmdr. Tom Ehrenberg told the Minnesota Star Tribune on Feb. 12. “It’s an active and open investigation, and therefore we will not be sharing details.”

Ehrenberg said there have been no arrests made in connection with Maxmiliano’s death, and the Washington County Attorney’s Office said it is awaiting a case to review for possible charges.

The medical examiner’s posting failed to disclose when the boy was injured, or where the injury or injuries were inflicted.

Maxmiliano’s obituary noted that “though his time with us was brief, Max brought immense joy and light to those around him. He delighted in watching ‘Cocomelon’ and shared countless playful moments roughhousing with his older brothers.”

“His bright spirit and infectious energy touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
