Supermaket chain Coborn's Inc. said Monday that it is expanding in Wisconsin, purchasing Marketplace Foods, owner of four grocery/liquor stores in the western part of the state.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

The Marketplace Foods outlets are in St. Croix Falls, Menomonie, Rice Lake and Hayward. They will continue to operate under the Marketplace Foods' banner, with current leadership, Corborn's said in a press statement. The chain has more than 400 employees.

"Marketplace Foods has a history of solid performance and a culture that is well aligned with our culture at Coborn's," CEO Chris Coborn said in a press statement.

St. Cloud-based Coborn's has 52 stores across Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin, operating under the names Coborn's, Cash Wise Foods and Save-A-Lot.

Marketplace Foods was founded by Frank and Doris Betchkal in Hayward in 1977, and their son Jason is the company's president.
