This week: Coaches sitting on hot seats
With Gary Andersen stepping down at Oregon State — and leaving $12.7 million on the table — here's a look at the Power Five coaches who might not be long for their jobs:
1. Butch Jones, Tennessee: The Volunteers are 3-2, but two of their wins are against Indiana State and Massachusetts, and they frittered away a game against Florida and lost 41-0 at home to Georgia. Standards are higher than that in Knoxville.
2. Bret Bielema, Arkansas: In four-plus years at Fayetteville, Bielema is 10-24 in SEC play, including losses to Texas A&M and South Carolina in which the Razorbacks (2-3) surrendered a combined 98 points. Now they have back-to-back games against No. 1 Alabama and No. 10 Auburn. A $5.8 million buyout might not save Bielema.
3. Mike Riley, Nebraska: The athletic director that hired him, Shawn Eichorst, already has been fired, so Riley is on shaky ground. The Huskers (3-3, 2-1 Big Ten) must be competitive against Ohio State on Saturday for Riley to have any chance to stay.
4. David Beaty, Kansas: The Jayhawks beat FCS-level Southeast Missouri State in their opener, but have given up 208 points in their past four games, all losses. And they still have to play TCU, Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Beaty is 3-26 in three seasons at Kansas, and he might not see a fourth.
5. Todd Graham, Arizona State: Graham had 10-win seasons in 2013 and '14, but the Sun Devils' stock has been trending downward, with back-to-back 6-7 and 5-7 seasons and a 2-3 start this year. The upcoming stretch of games against Washington, Utah and USC will be telling.
