A short jail stint is the sentence for a Lakeville dance instructor who sexually assaulted a teenage pupil at his home on numerous occasions.
Timothy M. Olson Jr., 36, was sentenced in Dakota County District Court last week to 60 days in jail after pleading guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct stemming from a series of liaisons during the summer and fall of 2022.
Judge Krista Marks’ sentence includes seven years’ probation, during which he can hold no position of authority over minors or vulnerable people, and must allow his internet use to be officially monitored.
According to the criminal complaint:
The girl told police that Olson was her instructor at a dance studio when she was in ninth grade before he started giving her private lessons when she was in 11th grade.
Olson soon was messaging the girl on Instagram, which “started out innocuous” before he asked her to come to his home, the complaint said. He threatened suicide if she didn’t visit or respond quickly enough.
In the summer and fall of 2022, there were five to eight sexual encounters at his home before she turned 18.
Under police questioning, Olson at first said “he never forced or raped anyone,” the complaint said. But when pressed, Olson admitted to the assaults.
