'Big three' of Jones, Travis and Vaughn named McDonald's All-Americans

Minnesota's "big three" of high school basketball were named Wednesday to play in McDonald's All-American high school game on April 2 at the United Center in Chicago.

Apple Valley's Tyus Jones will play for the East team, while DeLaSalle's Reid Travis and Rashad Vaughn, formerly of Cooper, will play for the West team.

Jones, the 6-1 point guard who led the Eagles to the Class 4A state championship last March, has signed with Duke.

Travis, a 6-7 forward who helped lead the Islanders to the two consecutive Class 3A championships, has signed with Stanford.

Vaughn, a 6-6 guard who transferred this school year to Findlay Prep of Henderson, Nev., has narrowed his college list to Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and UNLV. He plans to announce his college choice this spring.

Twenty-four senior boys and 24 girls nationwide were selected to play in the McDonald's All-American Game. Ten other players from Minnesota have previously been named McDonald's All-Americans, starting with St. Louis Park's Jim Petersen in 1980.

The Gophers men's hockey team will return to Big Ten play against Michigan State at home this weekend shorthanded.

Marshall's punishment is result of Saturday's game misconduct called after a hard check on Minnesota Duluth's Austin Farley in open ice. The referees huddled and determined it was a hit to the head.

NCAA rules state that any player who receives three game misconduct penalties in the same season, including exhibition games, have to sit out the team's next game.

Marshall's first game misconduct came in the preseason exhibition against Lethbridge. The second was Nov. 24, also against the Bulldogs.

"That's the rule today and we'll live with the rule. Ben understands it," Lucia said. "I know he was frustrated and disappointed."

Marshall wasn't made available for comment on Wednesday.

Defending champion Nathan Schroeder won the 30th running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

The Chisholm, Minn., native crossed the finish line in Duluth just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, four days after setting off on the 374-mile race up the North Shore of Lake Superior and back to Duluth.

This is Schroeder's third Beargrease Marathon title overall.

A new management team took over the Beargrease this year after the previous volunteer group canceled it last fall.

• Gophers junior Leandro Toledo, from Hamburg, Germany, was named the Big Ten men's tennis player of the week. He won two singles matches, one against a top 25 player, and went 1-1 in doubles against opponents from Notre Dame and Brigham Young.
