Area college football roundup: St. Thomas ends two-game skid, routs Davidson

Joseph Koch rushed for three touchdowns and Pat Bowen ran for two touchdowns and caught a TD pass to lead St. Thomas to a 57-13 Pioneer League victory over Davidson on Saturday in Davidson, N.C.

The Tommies (3-3, 1-2), who ended a two-game losing streak, led 29-0 at halftime and scored on their first three possessions of the second half to extend their lead to 50-0.

Andy Peters passed for 190 yards and a TD for the Tommies, who had 527 yards in offense and averaged 9.9 yards per play.

On St. Thomas’ first play of the second half, Amari Powell threw an 85-yard TD pass to Quentin Cobb-Butler to extend the Tommies’ lead to 35-0.

Bowen’s 49-yard TD run and the PAT with 11 minutes left in the third quarter made it 43-0. Koch’s 13-yard TD run and the PAT with 7:24 remaining in the quarter made it 50-0.

The 57 points were the most scored by the Tommies since a 54-15 victory over Presbyterian in 2021.

North Dakota State 45, Southern Illinois 17: The unbeaten Bison, No. 1 in the FCS coaches poll, pulled away in the second half for the victory in Fargo, N.D. Cole Payton threw for 243 yards and a TD and rushed for two TDs for the Bison, who led 17-10 at halftime.

South Dakota State 31, Northern Iowa 3: Chase Mason threw for 249 yards and two TDs to lead the host Jackrabbits past the Panthers.

North Dakota 35, Youngstown State 17: Jerry Kaminski threw three TD passes and Sawyer Seidl rushed for 114 yards to lead the Fighting Hawks past the Penguins in Grand Forks, N.D.

South Dakota 19, Indiana State 14: Will Leyland tied a school record with four field goals to help the Coyotes outlast the host Sycamores for their first road victory of the season. Leyland’s final field goal, a 42-yarder, gave the Coyotes a 19-7 lead with 7:28 remaining. L.J. Phillips Jr. rushed for 187 yards and a TD for South Dakota.

Division II

Augustana 50, Concordia (St. Paul) 10: Rich Lucero passed for 256 yards and three TDs as the host Vikings, ranked No. 12 in Division II, remained unbeaten with the victory in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Bemidji State 24, Northern State 21: The host Beavers scored twice in the fourth quarter to take a 24-14 lead and then held on for the victory. Connor Carver rushed for 106 yards and a TD for Bemidji State.

Minnesota State Mankato 47, Winona State 21: After building a 30-7 halftime lead, the host Mavericks, ranked No. 9, scored two defensive touchdowns in the first two minutes of the second half en route to the victory. Jefferson Mobry returned a fumble 32 yards for a TD on the first play of the second half, and on Winona’s ensuing possession, Cade Stingle returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown. Mitchell Thompson threw for 169 yards and two TDs, Sam Backer ran for two TDs and Carter Henderson rushed for 136 yards for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State Moorhead 38, Mary 35: The visiting Dragons withstood a fourth-quarter comeback by the Marauders to hold on for the victory in Bismarck, N.D. The Marauders scored three TDs in the final eight minutes — the last with 2:04 left — to get within three. The Marauders got the ball back with 24 seconds remaining and reached midfield before losing a fumble. Jack Strand passed for 253 yards and three TDs for the Dragons.

Northern State 34, Minnesota Duluth 31: Tasean Young recovered a fumble and had an interception to help the host Wolves outlast Minnesota Duluth in Aberdeen, S.D. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 8 in Division II, scored with 1 minute, 36 seconds remaining to pull within three points. Young’s interception, at the Northern State 34-yard line with 1 minute, 12 seconds remaining, sealed the Bulldogs’ first loss of the season. In the second quarter, Young recovered a fumble at the Wolves 14-yard line and returned it 63 yards to the Bulldogs 23. Five plays later, the Wolves scored to take a 20-10 lead. Kyle Walljasper passed for 226 yards and two TDs and rushed for 105 yards and two TDs for the Bulldogs, who outgained the Wolves 428-353.

Sioux Falls 35, Southwest Minnesota State 14: Tate Schafer passed for 384 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two additional TDs to lead the Cougars past the host Mustangs in Marshall, Minn. Macloud Crowton threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs.

Division III

Bethel 56, Augsburg 7: Cooper Drews threw four TD passes and ran for a TD to lead the Royals, ranked No. 7 in Division III, past the Auggies in Minneapolis. Taye Manns rushed for 92 yards and a TD for the Royals, who ran for 271 yards.

Carleton 41, St. Scholastica 14: Jack Curtis completed 39 of 48 passes for 369 yards and two TDs as the Knights remained unbeaten in MIAC play with the victory over the host Saints in Duluth.

Concordia (Moorhead) 58, Hamline 12: Griffin Babolian and Nick Walter each ran for two TDs as the Cobbers, who rushed for 411 yards, ran past the Pipers in St. Paul.

Crown 17, Martin Luther 7: Jakari Hunnecook rushed for a TD and caught a TD pass to pace the Polars past the host Knights in New Ulm, Minn., for their third consecutive victory.

Greenville 23, Northwestern (St. Paul) 20: Pedro Paixao’s 23-yard field goal with 27 seconds remaining lifted Greenville past the host Eagles. Greenville led 20-0 midway through the third quarter, but the Eagles tied the score 20-20 on a 44-yard TD run by Keaton Sargent and the PAT with 3:41 remaining.

Gustavus Adolphus 35, St. Olaf 21: Dylan Blount threw for 333 yards and four TDS as the Gusties defeated the host Oles in Northfield for their first victory of the season.

Minnesota Morris 30, Westminster 27: Logan Ahler’s 19-yard field goal with three seconds remaining lifted the Cougars to the victory in Fulton, Mo. The Cougars led 20-7 at halftime, but Westminster outscored Morris 20-0 in the third quarter to take a 27-20 lead. The Cougars tied it with 8:48 left in the fourth quarter.

St. John’s 70, Macalester 0: Trey Feeney and Zander Dittbenner each threw three TD passes to pace the Johnnies, ranked No. 13, past the Scots in Collegeville, Minn. Joey Gendreau caught four TD passes in the first half as the Johnnies built a 56-0 halftime lead.
