Area college football roundup: MSU Moorhead outlasts Minot State in OT

The Dragons needed only one play in overtime to win the game, as Jack Strand threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brady Perryman.

Jack Strand’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Brady Perryman in overtime sent host Minnesota State Moorhead past Minot State 40-37 on Saturday.

Minot State outscored the Dragons 20-7 in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 points in the final six minutes, and tied the score on Brandon McCary’s 28-yard field goal with a second left. The Beavers had the ball first in OT and McCary kicked another 28-yard field goal for a 37-34 lead.

The Dragons responded with one play: Perryman’s second TD reception of the game.

Strand passed for 382 yards and four TDs for the Dragons, who led 17-14 at halftime before outscoring the Beavers 10-0 in the third quarter. Devan Daniels rushed for 140 yards and a TD and Evan Lovett rushed for 125 yards and a TD for the Beavers, who rushed for 341 yards.

Bemidji State 24, Northern State 21: Connor Carver scored on a 51-yard run and threw a TD pass in the fourth quarter to lead the host Beavers to their first victory of the season. The Wolves scored with 10 minutes remaining to take a 14-10 lead before the Beavers responded. Northern State scored again with 43 seconds left, but Bemidji State recovered the onside kick.

Minnesota Duluth 63, Southwest Minnesota State 28: Kyle Walljasper passed for 278 yards and four touchdowns to lead the No. 9 Bulldogs past the visiting Mustangs. All four of Walljasper’s TD passes came in the first half as unbeaten UMD built a 35-7 halftime lead.

Minnesota State Mankato 47, Concordia (St. Paul) 19: Sam Backer rushed for 114 yards and three TDs and Caden Johnson returned an interception 63 yards for a TD for the No. 10 Mavericks, who outscored the host Golden Bears 24-3 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Augustana 29, Sioux Falls 28: Isaiah Huber’s 24-yard TD reception and Sam Scholten’s run for two points with 1:18 remaining rallied Augustana, ranked No. 13 in the D2football.com poll, over the host Cougars. Augustana trailed 28-10 going into the fourth quarter.

Winona State 21, Wayne State (Neb.) 14: Jackson Flottmeyer threw two TD passes and ran for another as the host Warriors held off the Wildcats. Wayne State scored with 2:36 remaining and got the ball back with 1:59 left, but the Warriors stopped the Wildcats on downs.

Division III

Carleton 45, Gustavus Adolphus 28: Jack Curtis completed 38 of 52 passes for 378 yards and four TDS and Tyler Dimond caught two TD passes and ran for a TD to lead the Knights over the host Gusties.

Macalester 29, Hamline 0: Brennan Litchford and Vasco Sierra combined for 239 rushing yards, Jack Scully threw two TD passes and the host Scots shut out the Pipers. Macalester held Hamline to 205 total yards of offense.

Augsburg 44, St. Olaf 13: Caden Rodkewich passed for 297 yards and four TDs to pace the Auggies over the visiting Oles. Three of Rodkewich’s TD passes came in the second half as Augsburg scored touchdowns on five of its seven possessions in the second half.

Concordia (Moorhead) 49, St. Scholastica 21: Jersey Selzler passed for 376 yards and three TDs and Davion Henderson caught nine passes for 211 yards and two TDs to lead the host Cobbers past the Saints. Donald West threw for 264 yards and two TDs for St. Scholastica.

Minnesota Morris 35, Martin Luther 28: Carter Watnaas caught a tiebreaking 41-yard touchdown pass from Bryson Drake with 19 seconds remaining and the host Cougars earned their first victory of the season, beating the Knights. Sean-Keley Chinanga rushed 17 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns for Minnesota Morris.

Crown 22, Northwestern (St. Paul) 3: Jamarrius Courtney ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns, the second a 76-yard run in the fourth quarter, and also threw a touchdown pass as the host Polars defeated the Eagles in St. Bonifacius.
