3M Co. said Thursday it has acquired Hybrivet Systems Inc., a Natick, Mass., provider of instant-read products to detect lead and other contaminants and toxins.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Hybrivet has 11 employees.

The acquisition gives 3M access to the potentially large market for testing paints for lead in older houses and commercial buildings to meet new federal government regulations.

The transaction is the latest in a series of acquisitions for the Maplewood-based giant, which spent more than $2 billion acquiring businesses last year and plans to spend $2 billion to $3 billion this year.
