Wild signs free agent Jed Ortmeyer; Theodore starts, Miettinen, Scandella out vs. Devils

Afternoon from Newark.

Jose Theodore will start tonight vs. the Devils as coach Todd Richards gives him an extra few days of rest with his lower body injury. Antti Miettinen (charleyhorse) won't play tonight. Brad Staubitz will re-enter the lineup.

Same D tonight, meaning Marco Scandella will be scratched after missing Sunday's game with the flu. But he's feeling better. Jared Spurgeon will play the power play tonight and with Miettinen out, Matt Cullen or Pierre-Marc Bouchard will move from the point up to the half wall on the power play.

Assistant Dave Barr was under the weather this morning, so Richards and Barr were to meet this afternoon to discuss which forward moves up on the power play.

The Wild has signed free-agent Jed Ortmeyer, a heart-and-soul type guy, to a one-year deal. They signed him to an AHL pro tryout the other day. He's on waivers and if he clears tomorrow at 11 a.m., he'll officially be assigned to Houston.

He's scored 51 points in 306 NHL games for the Rangers, Predators and Sharks. The former Michigan standout was undrafted. It's a depth signing, so I'm sure we'll see him up and down the rest of the year.

Brian Rolston will return to the Devils' lineup tonight. Dainus Zubrus is injured.

I'll update the blog soon with more, but wanted to get the Ortmeyer news up.
