White Sox lose to Twins to continue futility against AL Central, with Tigers next

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox keep losing to AL Central rivals, and next up is the class of the division.

Kevin Correia pitched seven shutout innings, Brian Dozier and Joe Mauer backed him with home runs and the Minnesota Twins beat the White Sox 5-2 Sunday.

The Twins took three of four games in the series and have won nine of 12 against the White Sox this season.

The White Sox have lost 22 of their last 26 games against AL Central opponents. They begin a series against first-place Detroit on Monday.

"You can't speak for everyone, but nobody comes here every day and expects to lose. We prepare every day to win that day and when things don't work out, you try to put it away and you know you've got another one tomorrow," Chicago's Adam Dunn said.

Dunn and Conor Gillaspie hit solo home runs off Casey Fien in the ninth.

The White Sox also had another baserunning blunder. Alejandro De Aza was thrown out after trying to advance to third on Gordon Beckham's grounder to shortstop in the third inning.

"If it's in front of you, you've got to go back. It's a mistake," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura.

Minnesota has hit 19 home runs in its last eight games against the White Sox, including 11 home during the four-game series to score all 19 runs.

"It sure seemed we missed a lot of opportunities, but we did put the ball in the seats. As we said coming into this series, in this ballpark the ball flies. If you get a hold of it pretty decent, it is going to go out. That's how we won the games here. We put the ball in the seats," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

Dozier's three-run homer, his 11th of the season, gave the Twins a 3-0 lead in the fifth after Chris Colabello singled and Doug Bernier walked. After Jamey Carroll singled, Mauer hit his ninth homer.

Mauer is hitting .351 in 64 career games at U.S. Cellular Field.

Correia (8-8) struck out seven, tying a season high. He allowed five hits and one walk in his second scoreless outing of the season.

"I talked to him at the end and he said he located the ball, he was spot on with his pitches. That's kind of why you see the big zero up on the scoreboard," Gardenhire said.

Jose Quintana (6-4) gave up five runs in five innings, all in the fifth. That's the most runs he's permitted since giving up six on April 5 against Seattle.

"It happened quick. He pitched good except for that one inning. It wasn't anything that elongated by anything. It just happened," Ventura said.

Quintana is 0-2 with a 9.15 ERA in four career starts against the Twins. The White Sox have scored three runs or fewer in 17 of his 24 starts. Dunn hit his 27th homer and Gillaspie had his 10th.

Notes: The White Sox acquired INF Leury Garcia from Texas Rangers as the player to be named in the trade for OF Alex Rios. He'll report to Triple-A Charlotte. ... White Sox OF Dayan Viciedo, who's been in and out of the lineup with a bruised thumb, didn't play.
