What’s open and closed on New Year’s Day 2026

Grocery stores, Target and Walmart, shopping malls and liquor stores will be open, as will some museums. Transit services will run on limited schedules.

Here is what’s open and what’s closed on New Year’s Day in the Twin Cities area:

Grocery stores: Major supermarkets will be open.

Liquor stores: Stores will be open.

Malls and big-box stores: Target, Walmart and shopping malls will be open; Sam’s Club and Costco stores will be closed.

Mass transit: Metro Transit buses, trains and bus rapid transit lines follow holiday schedules. For route information, call 612-373-3333 or go to metrotransit.org. The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority will run just one route, 495, on a weekend schedule. Maple Grove Transit, Plymouth Metrolink and SouthWest Transit will not run on New Year’s Day.

Libraries: Libraries will be closed.

Museums: Minneapolis Institute of Art, Children’s Museum of Minnesota and the Science Museum of Minnesota are open. The Walker Art Center, the Bell Museum and Mill City Museum are closed.

Parking meters: Not enforced in Minneapolis, St. Paul and at the University of Minnesota.

Banks: All traditional branches and any in-store locations will be closed.

Post offices: Closed. No regular mail service.

Schools: Public schools and the University of Minnesota are closed for winter break.

Public agencies: Local, state and federal offices will be closed.
