Police in West St. Paul shot and killed a man Thursday after he barricaded himself inside a home for almost eight hours and shot at officers.

Police surrounded the home in the 1200 block of Ottawa Avenue around 11 a.m. after spotting a motorcycle associated with the man, who was wanted for numerous felony warrants, according to a news release from the West St. Paul Police Department. Others inside the house were evacuated and confirmed that the man was inside, police said.

Members of South Metro SWAT, a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement team, took over command at the scene around 2:15 p.m. The man fired at them over the course of four hours, striking armored police vehicles and an officer’s ballistic shield, police said.

Police threw a cellphone into the home to communicate with the man and used drones and robotics in an attempt to spot him. They deployed multiple rounds of chemical irritants, but the man continued firing.

Around 6:40 p.m., when the man took aim with a long gun, a SWAT team member opened fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The incident is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Correction: This article has been corrected to reflect that the officer who fired their weapon is a member of the South Metro SWAT team.
