Winning the Class 2A state championship last month was just the beginning of a successful postseason for the Wayzata girls' cross-country team.
The Trojans were runaway winners at the Nike Heartland Regional meet in Yankton, S.D., in November and rode that momentum to victory Saturday in the Nike Cross-Country Nationals in Portland, Ore.
Wayzata's top five finishers — Anna French, Annika Lerdall, Mary Franke, Michaela Keller-Miller and Alayna Sonnesyn — scored 108 team points. Runner-up Fayetteville-Manlius (N.Y.), seeking an eighth consecutive title, finished 12 points behind.
French, a junior, finished eighth overall with a 5K time of 17 minutes, 43.4 seconds. In the boys' race, Edina, which won the Heartland Regionals, finished 10th.
All-America soccer
Blake senior midfielder Korli Akiti was one of just two Minnesotans named to the All-America first team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. North St. Paul forward Justin Oliver was also named to the first team.
On the girls' side, 2013 Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year Elizabeth Endy of Minnetonka was named first team All-America as a defender. Benilde-St. Margaret's Kelly Pannek made the team as a midfielder.
State swimming rankings
Blake/Breck was ranked No. 2 and Orono No. 3 in the first Class 1A boys' swimming and diving dual-meet rankings released by the State Swimming Coaches Association Monday. St. Thomas Academy earned the top spot.
Worth noting
• Waconia senior guard Ryan Boll scored 30 points in the Wildcats' 80-65 victory over Mound-Westonka Saturday.
