Warranty companies get most complaintsWhich type of service provider drew the most complaints in 2010? According to Angie's List (www.angieslist.com), home warranty companies topped the list for the sixth year.

If you're considering a home warranty program when buying a house -- to cover things such as a garbage disposal, the plumbing, the electrical wiring and the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system -- check first with Angie's List, the Better Business Bureau or online for a company's complaints.

The complaints list also includes -- in order -- property management companies, Internet service providers, TV cable and satellite providers, wedding professionals (bridal and tuxedo shops and planners), dry cleaners, phone services, auto sales, car services (limo and taxis) and florists.

Angie's List charges an annual fee for members. Information at the Better Business Bureau is free at 651-699-1111 or www.thefirstbbb.org.

Get savings at the pumpGas prices have passed $3 again, so brush off those gas-saving measures. A rule of thumb is to consider a fill-up anytime you're heading north of Interstate 694. Stations in Blaine and Coon Rapids have some of the lowest prices in the Twin Cities area.

Costco gas stations are consistently low-priced, and you get an additional discount of 3 cents a gallon as an annual rebate on your American Express card. Holiday accepts competitors' coupons, and BP stations offer a $10 gas card after you buy 8 gallons or more five times.

Budget Valentine's stayFeb. 14 doesn't have an exclusive on romance. You and your partner can be just as sweet to each other any other day of the year. So why pay a premium for a hotel rendezvous on Feb. 12, 13 or 14 when you can enjoy each other's company just as much on the weekend before or after Valentine's Day?

The St. Paul Hotel (www. saintpaulhotel.com), which overlooks Rice Park, has a special of $125 a night on Feb. 6 and Feb. 20. The rate includes a deluxe room, a bottle of Domaine Chandon and parking. Rates on Valentine's weekend are about $40 more, and there's no free champagne or parking. Call 651-292-9292, and ask for the "Cupid special."

No matter which hotel you choose, remember that Minnesota hotels are hurting for business on most winter weekends. Find out the lowest rate at your favorite hotel in advance, then just show up on a Saturday afternoon and ask for the best rate for the night.
