Tasty, cheap meatballs At a holiday get-together, the host and hostess prepared a smorgasbord of treats made from scratch. I raved to the hostess about the tender, flavorful meatballs. She leaned in close and confided that they were from Ikea (Köttbullar meatballs, $6.99 for 40 ounces). She had added some nutmeg for flavor and cornstarch to thicken the sauce. Maybe the price isn't the lowest in the Twin Cities (Costco sells Kirkland Signature Italian meatballs, $14 for 96 ounces), but Ikea still has a better deal than Cub's lowest-priced offering this week (Fast Fixin' brand, $5.99 on sale for 28 ounces). (Prices were checked Monday at Ikea in Bloomington, Costco in St. Louis Park and Cub Foods on Lake Street in Minneapolis.)

Clearance-priced gifts Goodthings gift and clothing shop (Maple Grove, 763-494-9255; White Bear Lake, 651-426-8006; www.shopgoodthings.com) is offering what it calls the "biggest and best bargains of the year." The sale on clothing, jewelry, gifts and housewares runs Friday through Sunday.
