Randy Moss, shown during Sunday's NFL Countdown (via ESPN), will be a guest on Monday's ManningCast alternate broadcast of the Vikings vs. Bears game.

It doesn’t require much effort to identify the enticing story lines that would attract the “ManningCast” to Monday night’s Week 1 game between the Vikings and Bears, nor is it very hard to explain the secret of the alternate broadcast’s popularity.

The heart of the show is legendary quarterbacks and brothers Peyton and Eli Manning talking football, and their real-time evaluation of Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy’s debut should be fascinating to digest.

“At the end of the day, you have two of the greatest quarterbacks of all time,” said Sam Pepper, the show’s executive producer, during an appearance on Monday’s Daily Delivery podcast. “[They] know the game so well and and are legitimately excited when big plays happen and interesting things happen and want to share that knowledge and that excitement with all the viewers.”

This is Year 5 of the ManningCast, and the format remains largely unchanged because its beauty is its simplicity.

That said, the timing and relevance of a planned special guest Monday might end up stealing the show.

Legendary Vikings receiver Randy Moss, who recently completed treatment for bile duct cancer and returned to ESPN’s Sunday Countdown before Week 1’s large slate of games, is set to join the Manning brothers on Monday’s ManningCast.

“When you think Vikings, I mean, who else would you want to have on?” Pepper said. “We’re so happy that he said yes and we’re so thrilled that Randy’s doing well and we’re honored to be a part of that comeback story for him.”

Moss appeared on a 2022 edition of the ManningCast during a Buccaneers game featuring his former Patriots QB Tom Brady, and a lot of the emphasis during that interview was focused on their relationship.

“We didn’t tell a lot of his Vikings story while he was on, so there’s a lot of ground to cover and a lot of stories to tell,” Pepper said.

Here are nine more things to know today:

  • It will be hard for Monday night to top Sunday night. The Bills stunned the Ravens 41-40 — that’s a “Scorigami,” by the way, as the first time that has been the final score in an NFL game — by scoring 16 points in the final four minutes. I was screaming at the TV for John Harbaugh to go for it on 4th-and-3 on the Ravens’ final drive, but he punted. The Bills predictably marched down the field and won on a nearly blocked chip shot by Matt Prater, the 41-year-old kicker who joined the Bills just three days before the win.
    • Week 1 hot takes can be dangerous, but let’s just say the Packers might be pretty good while the Lions are a notch below where they were last year. Green Bay controlled things from start to finish in Sunday’s 27-13 win.
      • There are a lot of confusing trends out there that I learn about largely from my kids, but one that I just don’t understand at all is the 6-7 meme. I am grateful, though, that I knew enough to know that Jim Nantz dropped it into his broadcast of the Packers’ win.

        • In quarterbacks associated with the Vikings news: Aaron Rodgers, who the Vikings passed on trying to sign this offseason, threw four touchdown passes to rally the Steelers past the Jets 34-32 in another excellent Sunday game. ... Daniel Jones, who was graced by the Kevin O’Connell QB whispering magic in 2024 before signing with the Colts, was nearly flawless in a 33-8 win over the Dolphins. ... Sam Darnold, last year’s surprising hero for the Vikings, was OK but only attempted 23 passes for Seattle in a 17-13 loss to the 49ers. His fumble inside the 49ers’ 10 yard line in the final minute sealed the result. ... Kirk Cousins watched from the bench as Michael Penix Jr. played well for Atlanta. The Falcons missed a field goal in the closing seconds and lost 23-20 to Tampa.
          • A Week 1 loss won’t seal anyone’s fate, but it is an important week. RotoWire reports that almost 69% of Week 1 winners since 2015 have made the playoffs, while 80% of teams to reach the conference title games have won in Week 1.
            • Former Lynx greats Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles were enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend. The Lynx had a game (and won) the same time as the ceremony, but the WNBA in a since-deleted post indicated that coach Cheryl Reeve was on hand celebrating with her former players. The Lynx social media team had some fun with that.
