The USA women's national team will hold a training camp from Tuesday to April 2 in Minneapolis ahead of the women's Final Four.

It will include seven players who have previously won gold medals while playing for USA Basketball at the senior level. The training camp will end with a free practice April 2 open to the public from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Tourney Town, located inside the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Among those accepting invitations to the training camp are Lynx players Angel McCoughtry and Aerial Powers.

Three U gymnasts honored

Fifth-year seniors Lexy Ramler and Ona Loper and sophomore Mya Hooten of the Gophers were named All-America gymnasts by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association.

Ramler earned first team All-America honors in the all-around and beam and was named to the second team on bars. Loper was named to the first team in the all-around and vault, while Hooten was named to the first team on floor and second team on vault.

NSIC wrestling honors

Minnesota State Mankato junior Darrell Mason, the NCAA Division II champion at heavyweight, was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Year.

Mason, of Chicago, was 22-0 and was named the outstanding wrestler at the national tournament. He had two pins and seven major decisions

Augustana's Jason Reitmeier was named the NSIC Coach of the Year. He led the Vikings to an 8-1 conference record and won his 200th career dual meet this season.

Big Ten opener for U softball

The Gophers softball team (13-11-1) will open its Big Ten season against Rutgers at 2 p.m. Friday in the first game of three in Piscataway, N.J.

Natalie DenHartog, who has eight homers in her past 10 games, needs one more to break Jordanne Nygren's career record of 51 set in 2003. DenHartog has 12 this season, tying her for fifth in Division I softball.

Dragons coach retires

Minnesota State Moorhead men's basketball coach Chad Walthall announced that he will retire after 12 seasons leading the Dragons.

He averaged 21 wins per season, was national and regional Division II Coach of the Year in 2015 and took six teams to NCAA tournaments. His most recent team won the school's first-ever NSIC tournament.

U swim mark set

Gophers freshman Bar Soloveychik broke his own school record in the 500-yard freestyle preliminaries (4 minutes, 12.76 seconds) on the second day of the NCAA swimming and diving meet in Atlanta. He finished 13th (4:15.31) in the consolation finals.

  • The Vikings will host Packers free agent Chandon Sullivan this weekend, a league source confirmed. He started 20 games as Green Bay's slot cornerback over the past two seasons.
  • Carleton starter Kiefer Lord was named to D3baseball.com's team of the week. The sophomore from San Carlos, Calif., tossed eight shutout innings over a pair of outings last week. He gave up only two hits, struck out 12 and walked one.
