The United Steelworkers union and Cliffs Natural Resources agreed to extend their labor contract for 30 days so bargaining talks can continue.
The original contract, which was set to expire Thursday, covers workers in Hibbing Taconite and United Taconite on Minnesota's Iron Range.
Steelworkers also are in talks with U.S. Steel, the Pennsylvania-based behemoth that owns Minntac in Mountain Iron, Minn., and Keetac in Keewatin, Minn. U.S. Steel's labor contract expired Sept. 1 but talks have continued.
About 2,300 Minnesota steelworkers are covered by labor contracts at both Cliffs and U.S. Steel.
