United edges Tampa Bay in soccer

Christian Ramirez scored two goals, his league-leading 18th and 19th of the season, and Juliano Vicentini got his first goal as visiting Minnesota United FC edged the Tampa Bay Rowdies 3-2 on Wednesday in the NASL.

Vicentini's goal in the 66th minute put the Loons ahead 3-1.

With three matches left, United (10-2-3) is one win or a San Antonio loss from clinching home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

U swept in volleyball

No. 5-rated Wisconsin defeated the Gophers 25-16, 25-19 and 30-28 in a Big Ten volleyball match at the Sports Pavilion on Wednesday night. Daly Santana led the Gophers (13-5, 3-4) with 17 kills.

Ellen Chapman had 12 kills to lead the Badgers (15-2, 6-1), who won their sixth match in a row.

• Minnesota Duluth will retire the number of Bill Watson during a game against Denver on Oct. 24 at Amsoil Arena. The 1985 Hobey Baker Award winner played three seasons at UMD.
