An Uber driver has died three days after a suspected drunken motorist ran a red light in north Minneapolis and hit him, authorities said Monday.
Abdishakur A. Sandiko, 48, of Minneapolis, died at Hennepin County Medical Center from injuries he sustained Friday night at Lyndale and Plymouth avenues N., police said.
Emery J. Winford, the driver accused of causing the crash, also was treated at HCMC and then arrested on suspicion of felony criminal vehicular operation while intoxicated and driving without a valid license. Winford, who was driving after having his license revoked, remains jailed pending charges.
Winford has been convicted five times for driving after his license has been either revoked or suspended, state records show.
According to police, Sandiko was heading east on Plymouth with a customer when his car was hit by the sport-utility vehicle driven by Winford on southbound Lyndale.
The collision sent Sandiko's car into an electrical box, causing a power failure that lasted several hours.
Police said Winford also was probably speeding at the time of the crash.
