Two Texans change their minds

Allen, Veazie headed elsewhere

January 20, 2010 at 12:23AM

Greetings.

According to GopherIllustrated.com, two high schoolers from Texas who had verbally committed to the Gophers have changed their minds. A third appears to be wavering.

They are:

--Offensive lineman Josh Allen from Cedar Hill, Texas. He Told GI.com that the Gophers had been talking to him about being a grayshirt and that he's now considering Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State.

--Cornerback Allen Veazie from Houston, who said he was looking at Arizona, Miami (Ohio) and Iowa State.

According to GI.com, receiver Chris Hawkins of Channelview, Texas, is still committed to the Gophers, but is also visiting TCU this weekend.

OK, so what do we make of this? Both Allen and Veazie are three-star rated by Rivals.com. You folks will probably call me an apologist, but when a guy says he's considering La. Tech and New Mexico State, and that the word greyshirt was being thrown around by the Gophers staff, that tells me he wasn't extremely high on their list anyway.

I know that the coaches are very high on the prospects for the offensive line going forward. Ryan Wynn should be ready to compete at center. The coaches are expecting a lot from Ed Olson and Brooks Michel, who redshirted in 2009. In the upcoming class is four-star lineman Jimmy Gjere as well as Jonathan Ragoo, Mark Lenkiewicz, Matt Eggen and Zac Epping. And don't forget, Josh Campion will be here this year as well.

And here's a thought: Could the Gophers cooling on Allen be in any way related to the coaching knowing about some other very highly-rated offensive lineman's (initials SH) plans come signing day? OK, so that is pure speculation, but what the heck?

The Gophers are going to need depth at defensive back going forward, though. As for Hawkins, we'll just have to wait and see.
