A woman and a man were killed in a shooting early Saturday in Moorhead that investigators suspect was a murder-suicide, authorities said.
According to police, officers were called to an apartment building in the 1100 block of 2nd Avenue S. where they found the bodies of Nancy Acosta, 53, and Camilo Acosta, 21. They also found a firearm.
Police said a juvenile and an adult, who were said to be present at the time of the shooting, were on the scene but not injured.
The deaths came just days after two people were killed in Moorhead by Fargo police officers with the Red River Valley SWAT team, following a domestic violence report in an apartment in the 2400 block of 3rd Avenue N.
The men who died were identified Friday by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office as Nathan Heiberg, 42, of Moorhead, and Lucas Heiberg, 41, of Grand Forks, N.D.
The Fargo officers involved in the use-of-force incident were Sgt. Michael Anderson, Sgt. Kyle Seehusen and Officer Tyler Seehusen, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said. All three have been placed on critical incident leave by the Fargo Police Department.
According to the BCA’s initial investigation, Moorhead officers were called Monday evening on an order for protection violation to the apartment, where a woman said she had been assaulted by Nathan and Lucas Heiberg.
Officers began to force open the door when they got no response from the men, but backed away when they heard a shot from inside the apartment. The SWAT team arrived, entered the apartment and shot both men. Two small children in the apartment were not injured, and police recovered two firearms.
