Twitter will lay off 8 percent of its workforce, or up to 336 employees, the company announced through an SEC filing on Tuesday.
It said it anticipates absorbing a $10 to $20 million cash charge for severance packages. The majority of the staffers cut will be among the engineer ranks.
New CEO Jack Dorsey said the cuts are part of a larger effort to "to change how we work, and what we need to do that work."
"Product and Engineering are going to make the most significant structural changes to reflect our plan ahead," Dorsey said on Tuesday in an internal memo obtained by Re/code titled, "A more focused Twitter."
"We feel strongly that Engineering will move much faster with a smaller and nimbler team, while remaining the biggest percentage of our workforce. And the rest of the organization will be streamlined in parallel."
He added that making cuts isn't easy, but it's necessary. "This isn't easy. But it is right. The world needs a strong Twitter, and this is another step to get there."
