Byron Buxton will lead off Twins game tonight against Yankees after coming off IL

The Twins reinstated Byron Buxton from the 10-day injured list Monday morning ahead of a three-game series against the Yankees in New York.

Buxton missed 13 games because of left rib cage inflammation. He was an All-Star this season, and leads the team with 23 home runs and 59 RBI.

To make room on the 26-man roster, outfielder Carson McCusker was sent back to St. Paul.

The Twins (56-61) face the Yankees for the first time this season after winning two of three against Kansas City at Target Field. The Twins’ 5-3 victory in 11 innings over Kansas City on Sunday was their fifth victory in the past seven games.

The Twins went 0-6 against the Yankees in 2024, getting outscored 36-12. They are 5-29 at Yankee Stadium since 2015 — 5-26 in regular-season games and 0-3 in the postseason. ... The Twins are 13-8 against AL East teams this season, are 32-25 at home and 24-36 on the road.

The Yankees (62-56), who are in third place in the AL East, continue a six-game homestand after losing two of three to the Houston Astros. The Yankees’ 7-1 loss on Sunday was their seventh in the past nine games. The Yankees are 35-24 at home and 10-5 against AL Central teams.

Carlos Rodón is 8-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 13 career starts against the Twins. He was 2-0 against the Twins last season. ... OF Trent Grisham, in his second season with the Yankees, has hit a career-high 21 home runs — 16 of them have either tied the game (five) or given the Yankees the lead (11).

DH/OF Giancarlo Stanton, who started the season on the 60-day injured list, is hitting .287 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI in his last 29 games. Stanton has 439 career home runs. ... OF Aaron Judge, who is second in the AL with 37 home runs, hasn’t hit a home run since July 23. He was on the injured list from July 26 to August 5.
