Twins third baseman Miguel Sano a spectator today, other Twins news

The Twins kick off a six-game road trip tonight when they play the White Sox in Chicago. Hector Santiago is on the mound for the Twins, who won't have Miguel Sano or Brian Dozier in the starting lineup.

Lots to update here.

Miguel Sano will work out with the team before tonight's game but cannot be in the clubhouse or dugout once the first pitch is delivered. Twins manager Paul Molitor said he's given Sano the option of watching the game from a location at the park, or he can return to the team hotel.

Sano will serve a one-game suspension for his actions during a dust-up with the Tigers at Target Field last month. The league announced on Tuesday that it is upholding the suspension after listening to Sano's appeal on Friday.

"I don't really care for the ruling," Molitor said. "I'm disappointed."

Molitor said Sano essentially was provoked twice. Once by Tigers pitcher Matt Boyd and again by catcher James McCann. Plus, by being ejected from the game, he already had served part of the suspension. The league, nevertheless, stuck by its decision.

So the Twins will be without Sano and, perhaps, Brian Dozier tonight against the White Sox. Dozier, who has missed two games with a sprained left ankle, hit and ran the bases before the game and is close to returning. In fact, he could be available to pinch hit tonight if needed. The club does want to be cautious and make sure they aren't bringing him back too soon.

Molitor said Dozier should return to the lineup no later than Friday against Cleveland, if not sooner. The guess here is that Dozier talks himself into the lineup tomorrow.

Glen Perkins threw in the bullpen today, according to Chief Baseball Officer Derek Falvey. Falvey said if Perkins has a couple more good sessions, they will huddle and determine the next stage of Perkins' comeback from a torn labrum.

I'm hearing that Perkins viewed Tuesday's session as a positive outing. So if he can back that up with a couple more sessions, he might be ready for the next step.

Falvey said they have a couple of ideas on how to help lefthander Kevin Chapman, whom they acquired for infielder Danny Santana yesterday. Chapman will be assigned to Class AAA Rochester.

(by the way, the Twins seem determined to get former Braves pitchers until one works out. Sean Gilmartin, Scott Diamond and J.R. Graham also were Braves when the Twins either traded for them or selected them in the Rule 5 draft).

Falvey also noted how Nik Turley, Nick Burdi, Mason Melotakis and other relievers have been throwing lately. If might not happen right away, but look for the Twins to give these guys a shot. The major league bullpen needs juice, and these guys could bring it.

Burdi worked another 1.1 scoreless innings on Tuesday and now has a 0.77 ERA.

Stephen Gonsalves, slowed by shoulder problems, pitched four innings in an extended spring training game today as he works his way back to Class AA Chattanooga.

Tyler Jay (biceps tendinitis) should be ready to pitch in a game later this week, Falvey said.

J.T. Chargois (elbow impingement) is now in Florida to begin rehab work.

And that is all.......

Former Twin Mike Pelfrey is on the mound today for the White Sox. Former White Sox lefty Hector Santiago is on the mound for the Twins. Should be fun.
