The Twins have officially called up outfielder Matt Carson from Class AAA Rochester, where he batted .277 with 14 homers and 49 RBI in 110 games with the Red Wings. Carson, 31, has batted .200 in 46 games with Oakland during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Carson, signed as minor league free agent last November, provides some cover in case Denard Span needs more time to recover from a sore right collarbone.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Carson, the Twins outrighted outfielder Rene Tosoni, who batted .203 in 60 games with the Twins last year but is having a rough 2012 season in the minors. He's been injured, demoted and unable to find his swing. He's batting .227 at Class AA New Britain, .216 since the All-Star break.
