Turf Club’s winter calendar heats up again with local faves

Returning residencies with Charlie Parr and the Cactus Blossoms aren’t the only multi-night stands by Minnesota music vets at the St. Paul bar in the coming cold months.

Minnesota music fans have more reasons than ever to make it out to the Turf Club between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day.

Thanks to annual January residencies by both Charlie Parr and the Cactus Blossoms ― both going on for over a decade now ― St. Paul’s beloved postwar watering hole has long been known as a place to take in live music in the cold months, when touring bands are afraid to come to Minnesota. But there are a lot of other big homegrown shows on the calendar this year, too.

Those weekly warm-ups with Parr every Sunday and the CBs every Monday are confirmed again for January, each with different opening acts every week (and usually some surprise guests, too). Tickets just went on sale for those series, and they typically sell out weeks in advance. Consider this your warning.

The local music takeover at Turf Club will begin well before January, though. The Suburbs have announced a two-night stand at the venue over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28 and 29, which the dance-rock vets are billing as the Turf Club Takeover.

“Dance off your Pie!” read one of the Burbs’ social media posts about the gigs. Another promo for the shows features a repost from none other than Halsey, who originally posted a photo of her fiancé, Avan Jogia, wearing a Suburbs T-shirt.

After the Suburbs, Twin Cities punk kings Dillinger Four are playing their own two-night affair with loads of guests Dec. 5 and 6. Those shows are to promote the quartet’s new rarities compilation LP.

Other local music highlights through the winter at Turf Club include: the final two dates on country yahoos Trailer Trash’s run of Trashy Little Xmas shows, Dec. 19 and 20; the return of the all-star Tom Petty tribute band All Tomorrow’s Petty the weekend after Christmas, Dec. 26 and 27; the almost-annual Tribute to the Replacements on Jan. 3 that will once again be led by the Melismatics with a cast of singers and will focus on the Mats’ guttural debut, “Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash,” and a rare reunion show by late ’90s “flesh-rock” band Detroit on Jan. 10.
