Serena Williams is done for the season, just like her sister.

In a statement e-mailed to the AP by her agent, the younger Williams said Tuesday she "re-tore the tendon" in her right foot, which she originally injured by cutting it on glass at a restaurant shortly after winning Wimbledon in July. Williams had surgery in New York on Monday; she first had the foot repaired July 15.

Her announcement came less than two weeks after Venus Williams said she won't play for the rest of the year because of a lingering injury to her left knee. Both sisters will miss the WTA Championships next week in Doha, Qatar, as well as the Fed Cup final between the United States and Italy next month at San Diego.

Serena hasn't played on tour since July 3, when she overwhelmed Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2 to win her fourth Wimbledon championship and 13th Grand Slam singles title overall, most among active women. She lost the No. 1 ranking last week to Caroline Wozniacki, who has yet to win a Grand Slam tournament.

SOCCER

Rooney wants out at Man United Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson confirmed that Wayne Rooney, the reigning soccer player of the year in England, wants to leave the Premier League club.

"The player says he is adamant he wants to leave," Ferguson said.

Ferguson said Rooney, 24, called off contract negotiations in August. The striker's deal at United runs out in the summer of 2012.

Last season, Rooney scored 34 goals in Premier League play. But his form this season has dipped dramatically and his private life became the subject of allegations that he had repeatedly cheated on his then-pregnant wife with a prostitute.

Real Madrid dominates AC Milan

Real Madrid scored a convincing 2-0 victory over AC Milan in a showdown of the Champions League's two most successful clubs. Madrid, the nine-time champion, blitzed seven-time champ Milan's goal with 22 shots.

Bocanegra out three weeks

Defender Carlos Bocanegra, the United States national team captain, will be sidelined for three weeks for St.-Etienne in France because of a neck injury. He could return in time for the Americans' exhibition at South Africa Nov. 17.

MINNESOTA SCENE

Mona to take role with U athletics The University of Minnesota named local public relations executive Dave Mona as a special assistant to athletic director Joel Maturi.

Mona has served as color analyst on Gophers radio broadcasts for the past 13 years and has co-hosted the "Sports Huddle" show on WCCO-AM with Star Tribune columnist Sid Hartman for the past 29 years. He will continue in both those roles while splitting his time between the university and Weber Shandwick public relations.

Mona and his wife, Linda, led part of the fundraising for TCF Bank Stadium.

AROUND THE HORN

College basketball: Virginia said junior guard Sammy Zeglinski will miss up to eight weeks after having surgery to repair cartilage in his left knee. He led the Cavaliers in three-point field goals, assists and steals each of the past two seasons.

Cycling: With six high mountain stages and four hilltop finishes, the 2011 Tour de France route is tailor-made for three-time champion Alberto Contador -- if he's not banned for doping. Tour organizers unveiled the 2011 course, with Contador skipping the presentation.

Track and field: LaShawn Merritt, the 2008 gold medalist in the 400 meters, might be eligible for the 2012 Olympics, even though the IOC said he should not be after a doping ban. The arbitrators who banned him for 21 months refute what the IOC is saying.
