Trevor Mbakwe is the first player under Tubby Smith to earn all-Big Ten second team honors. Mbakwe was selected by both the league's coaches and media, the Big Ten announced Monday night.
Mbakwe led the league in rebounding with 10.5 boards per game. He also averaged 13.7 points per game during the regular season.
Blake Hoffarber was an all-Big Ten honorable mention by the media. He averaged 13.7 points per game and shot 38.6 percent from beyond the arc. He was also one of the league's Sportsmanship Award honorees.
A few other notes ...
-JaJuan Johnson was named player of the year by the media and coaches. I think Jordan Taylor and Jared Sullinger played their hearts out for their respective squads. But I think Johnson deserved the award. I didn't hesitate when I made my pick.
-Sullinger, who averaged 17.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, was not a unanimous first-team pick by the media or coaches. I don't get it. He's a candidate for national player or the year, but he wasn't good enough for the first team in the Big Ten?
Guess it just reminds me of the Damian Johnson snub last year. Guy was top three in blocks and steals and he didn't make the coaches' all-D squad.
