Righthander Trevor May has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after his back flared up again after pitching in Target Field during the most recent homestand. He has been shut down for the rest of the season and will see a specialist in California next week.

Twins GM Rob Antony said he wants May to report to camp healthy next spring - and ready to win a spot in the rotation. The Twins need starters, and Antony thinks May can be a solution. This turned out to be a season of setbacks and struggles for May, who was 2-2 with a 5.27 ERA in 44 games out of the bullpen.

May did not travel with the team on this road trip.

Third baseman Miguel Sano said his back didn't feel much better on Tuesday after having to leave Monday's game after the sixth inning. Twins manager Paul Molitor said Sano will need a couple days to let his back recover.

Righthander Jose Berrios threw in the bullpen and talked at length with the coaching staff about working on his fastball command. The Twins thought about moving him to the bullpen, but he will start on Friday in New York.

Joe Mauer, slowed by a sore right quad could play tomorrow. His availability for the interleague games in New York will be determined on how the next couple days go.

FYI, the 2017 schedule is expected to be released tomorrow around 11:30 a.m.
